On March 19, GO 10 crews began demolishing the flyover ramp at the Sunland Park interchange.
They started demo of the ramp alongside I-10, near the Sunland Park auto dealerships. On the other end of the flyover ramp, crews began demolishing a 600-foot-long section of pavement that approaches the ramp.
Crews demo’d the flyover ramp as much as they could without shutting down I-10.
Pay attention. Back-to-back weekend closures ahead!
This is really the tough part.
Demolition of the flyover ramp will continue after crews remove the Sunland Park Drive overpass, set to take place starting the night of Friday, May 4 and continuing through the weekend.
The good news is eastbound and westbound traffic exiting from I-10 will be able to stay on the frontage ramps to immediately re-enter I-10. (easy-peasy)
But wait! Keep reading.
The heavy work continues!
Once we get that pesky overpass demolished, we will disrupt your commute again on the very next weekend so we can dismantle the Sunland Park flyover ramp.
The detour for I-10 eastbound traffic will be a quick exit from I-10, stay on the frontage ramp, and re-enter I-10 at the very next ramp (easy-peasy); but, I-10 westbound traffic will have to exit at Executive Center Boulevard (Exit 16), then follow North Mesa Street (SH 20) to re-enter I-10 Westbound at the North Mesa Street (SH 20) entrance ramp. (not as easy)
There will be no access to the Sunland Park westbound entrance ramp. Sunland Park Drive will also be closed during this weekend between Mesa Hills Drive and Paisano Drive.
A third weekend closure may be needed May 18-21 if work does not progress as planned. Work progress during the two previous weekends could be impeded by factors such as wind.
There is a pay-off to all this disruption.
GO 10 is working hard to be finished with structures in the Sunland Park area by December this year.
We know you’re rooting for us, so please forgive the mess, don’t drive distracted, expect delays, and allow yourself more drive time so you can arrive on time, unflustered.
All closures are subject to change. Check for the latest information at go10elpaso.com under the “traffic alerts” tab.
